Here’s a crazy idea for those of you with a sense of the absurd. How’d you like to spend about $800 on a handmade plaster lamp, only to crack it open with a pick axe as soon as you take it out of the box?

That’s exactly the value proposition you’ll get if you pick up artist Jordi Canudas’/a> Less Lamp. You see, this pendant lighting fixture looks like a solid black hanging egg when you first receive it, letting exactly none of the light out into your room. But thanks to the included pick, you can chip your way through the delicate exterior eggshell and let the light shine out to your own liking.

As a matter of fact, you can start small, cracking out a few tiny pinholes to let the light out. But when you get bored with that, get the pick out again, and really get to work. A tap here and a pick there, et voila – a bright wash of light emerges from the bottom of your once perfect – now cracked – egg.

Despite it’s unintentionally naughty name, the Blow Sofa is actually a neat concept.

Just add “-up” to “Blow” and you’ll get the idea.

Measuring 71″ x 35″ when fully inflated, the Blow Sofa is made of a couple of dunnage bags/a>, which are made from scrap wood and are traditionally used as cushions or airbags for cargo. A couple of rubber straps tied to what seems to be an easy to assemble metal rack hold the bags together.

I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to fill up the bags on my own, but it’s nothing that a small air pump can handle. I could see myself buying one of these, as long as designer Malafor/a> changes the sofa’s name.

I get the point of having gold or diamond-studded jewelry, or even watches. Those things have timeless appeal. But re-forming an iPod’s body out of solid 18ct rose gold and then adding platinum and diamonds to it is plain dumb. And I’m not even concerned about the durability of the product – obviously the people are way above such mortal concerns – all I’m saying is this thing will look dumb in a few years. Honestly it looks dumb now, perhaps even dumber now that it’s been pimped.

Star Wars were meant to happen a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but what if they actually happened on Earth? French photographer Cédric Delsaux/a> imagines the scene if Star Wars was set in Dubai of all places.

You might wonder why Dubai. The main reason is that with the current economic crisis, a lot of buildings under construction haven’t been completed. The city is littered with cranes that aren’t building anything anymore. Needless to say, this creates an eerie, surreal backdrop for these images.

Delsaux’s series of photos is called The Dark Lens and is worth a gander over at Fubiz/a>. These are my faves.

Science fiction fans know the name Ralph McQuarrie/a>. The illustrator and designer has contributed to the look of some of the most popular films and TV series, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and the big one: the original Star Wars trilogy. eFX enlisted 3D modeler Jay Kushwara to turn one of McQuarrie’s most favorite concept sketches of Darth Vader’s helmet into a premium collectible. The limited edition helmet – priced at almost $900 (USD) – has already pre-sold out/a>, and I think it’s easy to see why:

This mask erases any ambiguity regarding which side Darth Vader was on. That’s the most menacing frown I have ever seen.

Makes one wonder why this wasn’t the version used in the trilogy. Maybe because Anakin became good in the end? You can read more about the making of the helmet at eFX’ website/a>.

Conceptualized by designaffairs studio/a> with developing countries in mind, the Swirl is a “washing ball” that also serves as a clothes bin, a container for water, and a toy.

The idea is that you place your dirty clothes in the Swirl, which can be push or pulled via its detachable handle or even better, kicked along to where you get water. Once you’ve added water and detergent to the Swirl, you can now go home, knowing that your clothes are being washed as you roll or kick the ball home.

Makes a lot of sense doesn’t it? Of course the efficacy and efficiency of the Swirl as a tool for washing clothes is debatable; the swirling patterns on the ball are supposed to help with that.

I think the Swirl – or something like it – could work as an actual product, but they should remove the toy aspect in the final product. Can you imagine how hard it would be for a kid to kick or roll around a durable plastic or steel ball that’s filled with clothes and water?

From the outside, this cardboard box sure doesn’t look like a very nice place to seek shelter. But one look inside, and you’ll see that the Five-Stars Cardboard Hotel is a luxurious resort, crafted from paper.

The design team of Keung Caputo/a> created four foldable suites, each with a cardboard bed, pillow and intricate cardboard details, cut with lasers and backlit with LEDs. Of course, the biggest problem with the cardboard hotel is that while your upper body is protected from the elements (unless it rains), your legs stick out. Eh, whaddya want from a cardboard box?

Each of the four cardboard suites features a different theme, and a welcoming, warm environment for its guests. I think I’d stay in this neon purple room with a cut out of what looks like the Taco Bell chihuahua.

According to the artists “Once (a room is) chosen, the selected hotel suite will be set up on location. Within seconds, what looked like a stack of cardboard, turns into a habitation.”

The Five-Stars Cardboard Hotel was recently featured at New York’s Miyako Yoshinaga/a> gallery, but has since moved on. If you’re lucky, you might find the suites at highway underpass near you.

For anyone who uses a scale regularly, it’s a given that most of them out there are pretty basic. How about injecting a bit of style and technology into these utilitarian weight-watchers? And no, I’m not talking about a scale that tweets your weight/a>.

Kwon Sunman’s/a> Rug With Scale is a neat-looking scale that looks like a shaggy rug. In addition to looking all warm and fuzzy, the scale will track your weight and can also display your target weight in comparison to your previous weight and goal weight.

I use a scale regularly and wouldn’t mind something like this that’s nice and soft underneath my feet instead of the typical cold metal or glass scales out there. Too bad it’s just a concept design at this point.
